In the summer of 2016 (and after travelling to the Andes Mountains and an eco-community in Llayzhatan, Ecuador), the similarities between Yoruba-based “limpiezas” and the numerous healing rituals conducted by shamans of the Shuar traditions resonated with Vinesett.

Vinesett and Almy-Pagán co-created and presented Enter the Yard on July 30, 2016.

Fusing aspects of Shuar traditions with Yoruba practices (for a constructed experience of sound, music, dance, conversation, fire, and water), the collaborative of performance artists illustrated their understanding of the belief in, and potency of, spirit, ancestors, magic, healing, and medicines found in our own backyards—what we call HOME.
The self-produced work featured musicians Khalid Saleem, Richard J. Vinesett, and Beverly Botsford. Dancers CC Croxton, Tria Smothers, and Oesa S. Vinesett welcomed the Durham community to witness and share in a unique ritual of remembrance, sound, music, movement, and meditation. |
